LORE & HISTORY

Actinolite’s name comes from the Greek word aktis meaning beam or ray. The sprays and beam-like formation of the stone likely inspired its name.

The mineralogist Richard Kirwan first discovered Actinolite in 1794. While usually dark green in color, this gemstone can also be found in different shades of green and occasionally even gray to black tones.

Actinolite lends its color to green shale, a sedimentary rock. It belongs to a large group consisting of around a hundred minerals known as amphiboles.

GEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Actinolite is an amphibole silicate mineral that crystallizes in the form of long blades or needle-like structures. It mostly occurs as a constituent of other stones rather than on its own; for example, it is the primary constituent of Nephrite Jade. This mineral is likewise commonly associated with Chlorite and Epidote in Greenstone, and it may rarely be included in Quartz, although it does not belong to the same family.

Actinolite possesses a distinct dark green color, but can also be white, yellow, gray, or black.  It is one of the six recognized members of the Asbestos family.
