Astrophyllite is a unique and rare form of titanium silicate. It derives its name from the Greek words astron and phyllon meaning “star leaf”. This mirrors the stone’s leaf or star-shaped growth pattern.

Astrophyllite was first collected from islands in southern Norway in the late 1700s but was not considered a single mineral until the 1950s. By the 1970s a set of 8 chemically and structurally similar minerals were identified that now make up the Astrophyllite group.
