LORE & HISTORY

An ancient sage noted that Aurichalcum, the Latinized version of the Greek word for mountain copper, was actually yellow copper or brass.  In 1839 the stone we now know as Aurichalcite was given its name as an allusion to its copper and zinc content as those minerals form the constituents of brass.  The metal Orichalcum is mentioned in several ancient writings about Atlantis, including Plato’s, and was said to be second in value only to gold.

GEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

Aurichalcite is a secondary mineral in Copper and Zinc deposits.  It typically occurs in blue or green and forms crusts or mats of tiny acicular crystals. These crystals often grow as feathery, tufted druzes and rarely as columnar crystal aggregates.  This mineral has a Zinc-to-Copper ratio of about 5:4; because of this, it is recommended to wash hands after handling due to the toxicity of Copper and Zinc.
