BLUE SAPPHIRE

A variety of Corundum, an aluminum oxide, along with Ruby. In essence, Corundum that is red is called Ruby, while Corundum that is blue is called Sapphire. Corundum that is yellow, green, pink, purple, orange or teal is called Fancy Sapphire, and clear Corundum is called White Sapphire. The different colors are caused by inclusions of different minerals. Blue Sapphires have trace amounts of Titanium and Iron. Sapphire has been known since antiquity and symbolized the heavens, wisdom and good judgement. Sapphire is one of the hardest minerals on Earth, just behind Diamond. Sapphire has a trigonal crystal system and is composed of only Aluminum and Oxygen. In order to form it requires an environment that is free of Silicon, which is extremely abundant in the Earth’s crust, and therefore makes Sapphires a rarity. Although low grade Sapphire, called Emery, is used as an abrasive (as in nail files). Today many gem quality Sapphires are created in a lab, though they are still found in many locations around the world.
