BLUE TOPAZ

A rare variety of Topaz, Blue Topaz is an aluminum fluorine silicate mineral that forms well formed vertical hexagonal crystals and small prismatic shards. Topaz is the hardest of the silicate minerals, ranking an 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. It acts as the placeholder for that hardness. Blue Topaz is extremely rare in nature and highly valuable. In the 1970’s the process of turning clear-brown Topaz to blue was discovered. The clear-brown Topaz is treated with high energy electron or gamma radiation and then heated to produce the color blue. Most Blue Topaz on the market today is treated that way. Topaz is the traditional birthstone for the month of November.
