BUMBLEBEE JASPER

(Indonesia)

Bumblebee Jasper does not contain quartz, but is actually radially grown, fibrous calcite. The name Jasper is a misnomer. It has yellow, orange, grey and black banding. The yellow is caused by sulfur, the white by Aragonite, & the orange colors are from the minerals Orpiment & Realgar, AKA ruby of arsenic. Realgar is toxic and is sometimes used to kill weeds, insects and rodents, though more potent minerals are more common. The black staining is caused by pyrite. Some specimens have grey breccia as well. It is only found around the Papandayan Volcano, West Java Province, Indonesia. Hands should be washed after handling.
