CHIASTOLITE

A variety of Andalusite with inclusions of graphite that give it a unique cross shape. The graphite is pushed aside by crystal growth within a rock that is being metamorphosed. It is one of a small number of minerals that commonly forms prismatic crystals with a square cross-section. Used as a gemstone in 16th century Europe, it was given out as an amulet or souvenir provided by the pilgrims returning from Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Today, Andalusite is used to make high temperature ceramics, like spark plugs.
