EMERALD

Emerald is a gemstone and a variety of the mineral beryl, colored by trace amounts of chromium and/or sometimes vanadium. Beryl has a hardness of 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale. Most emeralds are highly included, so their toughness (resistance to breakage) is classified as generally poor. The highest quality emerald comes from Colombia, where in the past, wars have been fought over the stone. Emerald has been known since ancient times, and is mentioned in the bible, and found at archaeological sites from South America to Egypt.
