FIRE AGATE

Fire Agate is found only in certain areas of Mexico and the southwestern US. It is a unique variety of the chalcedony family. The base stone is brown to red, with vibrant iridescent rainbow colors that come from the Schiller Effect, as found in mother-of-pearl. Caused by the alternating silica and iron oxide layers, which diffract and allow light to pass through and form an interference of colors within the microstructure layering of the stone. This play of light gives the agate its name, because it looks similar to a fire. The effect looks similar to opal, but it is much harder, ranking from 5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Historically, Fire Agate was used in alchemy because it was believed to contain the essence of fire.
