GREEN GOLDSTONE

A green, man-made glass with metallic flecks of chromium oxide. The exact origins of goldstone are unknown, but there are many stories. Some say it was accidentally made by monks when they knocked copper shavings into molten glass. But the more logical story involves the Venetian glass making family the Miotti’s, who developed the method in the 17th century and were granted exclusive rights to produce it by the government. Goldstone is made by melting silica, copper oxide, borax, and other chemicals that reduce the chromium oxide to its elemental form. When the glass is liquid, the vat is sealed off and all air is cut off from it. This is called an “oxygen reducing atmosphere” which keeps the glass hot enough for the metallic flecks to form, but not melt. Goldstone is also known by the name aventurine glass from the Latin word avventura (avventurina in Italian) meaning chance. It’s also sometimes called sun stone and monk’s gold. Aventurine, the stone, was named after aventurine glass because of its resemblance to goldstone.
