HAEMATITE

A common iron oxide with the chemical formula Fe₂O₃. It has different varieties including kidney ore, martite, iron rose & specularite. They vary from black, dark gray, silver gray, brown to red. All varieties are electrically conductive and have a rust red streak. Many pigments are made using hematite, such as ochre, and the name comes from the Greek word for blood. Hematite is not magnetic by nature, but can be magnetized using modern science. It was historically used to make wax seals and in mourning jewelry.
