IOWAITE
CHROMIUM BEARING IOWAITE

(Matlock drill core, Sioux County, Iowa)

Named after the state of Iowa, Iowaite is only found in this one location, a drill core that was dug looking for zinc in a layer of altered serpentine in precambrian basement layer of rock. Iowaite is composed of oxygen, magnesium, iron, hydrogen & chlorine in a trigonal-hexagonal scalenohedral structure. It is a member of the hydrotalcite group of minerals, habing varying amounts of water. The water evaporates after mining, changing the stone’s color from a deep blue/green to light green, then white, then rusty. A variety of Chromium bearing Iowaite is a deep indigo/purple, and is more stable in the air. It forms platy crystals with a greasy luster, soapy texture, cleavage similar to mica & is very soft at only a 1 on the Mohs scale.

Associated with the 3rd eye & crown chakras, zodiac sign of Libra & Scorpio & vibrates to the number 1.
