Jet is a mineraloid made of decayed wood, which changed form under extreme pressure. A form of coal. The term “jet black” refers to this stone. Jet is about 75% carbon, 12% oxygen and 13% sulfur and hydrogen. Jet may contain pyrite inclusions. It is soft and brittle and surprisingly light. It is found in England, France, Spain and the United States. It has been a popular material for carvings, beads and jewelry for over 10,000 years.
