In antiquity, the stone was ground up and made into a pigment called Ultramarine. It was the rarest and most expensive of all pigments. Blue was saved for Jesus and the virgin mary in many paintings of that time period. The main component of Lapis is Lazurite, making up 25% to 40% of the stone.
