LARIMAR

(Dominican Republic)

Larimar is a type of pectolite, an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. Pectolite is found in many locations, but larimar has a unique coloration due to volcanic activity that resulted in copper substitution for calcium. Larimar is only found in the Dominican Republic, and has only been mined since the late 1970โ€™s. It was named after the sea, mar, and the mine ownerโ€™s daughter, Larissa. Larimar can be green or brownish, due to inclusions of other minerals. The darker the blue, the higher the grade. It is also photosensitive & heat sensitive and will fade if exposed to too much sunlight, or heat.
