LARVIKITE

Named after the town of Larvik, Norway where the stone is found in great quantities. It is also found in Ontario, Canada. Larvikite is an igneous monzonite rock, which contains feldspar crystals. All 3 endmembers of the feldspar group of minerals are present in Larvikite, giving it’s characteristic blue-silver schiller effect called labradorescence. Larvikite may also contain Olivine, Apatite & quartz and is rich in Titanium. It occurs in the Larvik Batholith, a suite of ten igneous plutons emplaced in the Oslo Rift surrounded by the billion year old Sveconorweigian gneisses. It is very popular to clad part of commercial buildings with Larvikite by Norweigian business owners. It is also popular as a granite counter material, although it’s commercial name of Blue Pearl Granite is a misnomer.
