LEPIDOLITE

A lithium rich phyllosilicate mica mineral, of the monoclinic family. Lepidolite is known for being lilac purple, but also comes in pink, red, grey, yellow and white. It is not, as popularly believed, the lithium causes the purple/pink color, but manganese. It is one of the rare sources of the alkali metals rubidium & caesium. It forms in sheets with a perfect cleavage in 1 direction, a pearly to vitreous luster, and a hardness of about 3. Crushed to use as a mica pigment in makeup, glass, enamel and paint & used as a minor gemstone when stabilized.
