LLANITE
LLANOITE /QUE SERA /VULCANITE

(Llano County, Texas)

A porphyritic rhyolite with blue quartz phenocrysts and light grey to orange perthic feldspar. It is fine grained, massive and consists of very small quartz, feldspar and biotite mica crystals. It comes from central Texas, in a hypabyssal porphyritic rhyolite dike that intrudes Precambrian metamorphics in the Llano Uplift area. It is estimated to be 1.1 billion years old. The quartz found in Llanite is blue, a rare color for quartz, and hexagonal bipyramid in habit. The color is thought to be caused by inclusions of Ilmenite. Llanite is similar to granite, a very strong stone.
