MANGO QUARTZ

(Boyaca, Colombia)

A variety of Quartz crystals, first found in the 1980’s. These smallish points contain inclusions of what is believed to be halloysite, an aluminosilicate clay mineral. This is what causes the orange to yellow coloring located in the crystal points. The color appears as dusting, sprays, needles or phantoms in the crystal points. They display well formed prismatic points, sometimes double terminated, and very rarely, Japan Law twinning. Unfortunately, when these crystals were first discovered, they were ignored, as the attention was focused solely on retrieving the Emeralds that were also found in the same area. Colombia mines almost 90% of the world’s Emeralds, and until 2013 was dominated by the “Emerald Czar”, Don Victor Carranza. He had first discovered the mine in the 80’s, then poured concrete over the entrance to mine after amassing a large personal collection of Mango Quartz and removing most of the Emerald. However in 2017 the grandchildren of a local farmer discovered some points sticking out of the ground, and the mine was unearthed again. Don Victor Carranza’s personal collection of Mango Quartz, assumed to be massive, has never been discovered, but the remaining quartz is now being mined, spreading its transformative energies with the world. Yellow Aventurine and Golden Azeztulite™ are sometimes referred to as Mango Quartz in order to increase the price point. The only Mango Quartz is from Boyaca, Colombia, and is found with coloring only in the tips of small, well formed prismatic crystals.
