MOSS AGATE

Although not banded like agate, moss agate is a cryptocrystalline quartz in the chalcedony family, like all agates. It is clear to milky white with dendritic inclusions of iron or manganese that appear as moss or lichen. These iron oxides seep in during formation from the surrounding rock, permeating the slowly solidifying gel polymer solution of SiOշ, silicon dioxide. It is very similar to dendritic agate, only differing in the color of the dendrites, and their abundance, with Moss Agate having abundant green dendrites. Also found with red and yellow inclusions of manganese and iron. Found in India, Brazil, Uruguay, central Europe and the western US.
