PSILOMELANE

Barium manganese hydroxides that do not form visible crystals. These include Romanechite & Hollandite that are not specifically identified and sometimes mixed together. Psilomelane can be banded with Pyrolusite, with alternating layers of light to dark gray and black. It was discredited as an individual mineral in 1982, but the name is still in use today to describe the mixing of these minerals. Named for the Greek words for smooth and black.
