PYROLUSITE

The most common manganese mineral and one of several manganese oxides, all of which are very similar and difficult to differentiate from one another, especially in massive form. Wad is a term used to describe a combo of unidentified manganese oxides, which may include Pyrolusite, Manganite, Psilomelane &/or Ramanechite. Pyrolusite is known for finely fibrous acicular crystals that are sooty and leave residue when handled. It’s name comes from the Greek for “fire” and “to wash”, as this mineral was once used to remove green and brown tints during the manufacture of glass. Individual crystals are rare, more commonly this mineral is found in massive form or as radiating acicular spheres.
