SARDONYX
SARDINIAN ONYX

Sardonyx combines alternating layers of sard and onyx, varying in range from orange to red to black. Onyx means claw or fingernail in latin, and sard means red. Sardonyx has been prized for thousands of years. It is mentioned in the Bible many times. Ancient Greeks used to go into battle with cameos of the God Mars carved into Sardonyx. They also use it to make signet rings that would make impressions in wax seals, as it doesn’t stick to wax. During the Renaissance in Europe, Sardonyx was said to bestow eloquence, and midwives used it to ease childbirth by placing a piece between the breasts of laboring mothers. Today & throughout history, much of the world’s Sardonyx is dyed agate or calcite material.
