SAUSSURITE

Named after the Swiss explorer Horace Benedict de Saussure, who discovered it on Mont Blanc. Saussurite is a mineral aggregate which is formed as a hydrothermal alteration product of plagioclase feldspar. The process is known as Saussuritization and involves the calcium-bearing plagioclase feldspar being altered to a characteristic assemblage of minerals called Saussurite. These minerals include zoisite, chlorite, amphibole & carbonates. Saussurite is found spread throughout plagioclase feldspar or located near its outer margin. The process usually takes place during low-grade regional metamorphism of gabbros and basalts. It is only found in massive form and is sought after by sculptors and for building material. It is white with flecks of green. It is found in France, Australia, China, India & Russia.
