SEYMCHAN PALLASITE METEORITE

(June 1967, Russia)

During a geological survey in 1967, the first piece of meteorite was found in a dry river bed, weighing 600lbs. Months later another large piece was found 20 meters from the first, using a mine detector. In 2004 a new expedition found 110 lbs of new material, in which 20% had olivine crystals, making it a Pallasite meteorite. Until then it was not known that it was a Pallasite meteorite, as the original 2 pieces did not have any olivine. The Seymchan Pallasite Meteorite has the Widmanstätten Pattern, a triangular iron-nickel patterning that is brought out by cutting and etching of the meteorite.
