SUNSET SODALITE

A member of the sodalite group of minerals with hauyne, nosean, lazurite and tugtupite. It is known for its deep blue to blue-violet color. The Sunset variety has inclusions of Hematite that give it orange to red patches among the blue and white. It is used as a gemstone, a sculptural material and an architectural stone. Sodalite forms in igneous rocks that crystallize from sodium rich magmas. In these magmas there is little silicon or aluminum, and therefore quartz and feldspar are usually absent. Sodalite bearing rocks include nepheline, syenite, trachyte and phonolite. These rocks are so rare that they are almost never seen. Sodalite is found in Greenland, Russia, Canada, Namibia, Arkansas and Maine.
