Grecian lore suggests that Labradorite was associated with the Hyperboreans. These people were considered god-like or closer to god than other humans.

The Inuit lore from Canada, where Labradorite was discovered, tells that an Inuit warrior released the Aurora Borealis into the sky by breaking the stone with his spear. Folk tales further state that pieces of the Aurora remained in the stones resulting in their brightly flashing colors.

Scandinavian lore associated Labradorite with the Bifrost rainbow bridge which connected Earth (Midgard) to the gods (Asgard).

Lore from India states that Labradorite had the ability to bring love and well-being to families. People believed it to be connected to the throat chakra, thereby assisting in speaking openly. This stone was also associated with the third eye chakra and served to connect people to higher knowledge and spiritual energy.

Finally, Babylonian lore depicted Labradorite as sacred because it reflected the vision of the gods. Similarly to the Scandinavians, the Babylonians believed that Labradorite connected the physical and spiritual planes.

GEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

This plagioclase feldspar mineral was first discovered on the island of Labrador in Canada.  It has since been found in many other localities.  It displays an optical effect, also known as a shiller, called labradorescence.  This effect is caused by the slow cooling of the plagioclase feldspar while it was forming its phase evolution lamellar structure.  Therefore not all Labradorite displays this quality as it may have cooled too quickly, or it may possess a different chemical structure altogether.  Some specimens with a very high quality of labradorescence are called Spectrolite.
