LARIMAR

(Dominican Republic)

Larimar is a type of pectolite, an acid silicate hydrate of calcium and sodium. Pectolite is found in many locations, but larimar has a unique coloration due to volcanic activity that resulted in copper substitution for calcium. Larimar is only found in the Dominican Republic, and has only been mined since the late 1970’s. It was named after the sea, mar, and the mine owner’s daughter, Larissa. Larimar can be green or brownish, due to inclusions of other minerals. The darker the blue, the higher the grade. It is also photosensitive & heat sensitive and will fade if exposed to too much sunlight, or heat.
