PETRIFIED WOOD

Ancient trees that fell and were buried in earth that was water laden with abundant silica, and a lack of oxygen, which limited the amount of fungi and bacteria that would normally digest the wood. Instead of rotting, these trees slowly had their bodies replaced by chalcedony (most common), agate, opal, calcite or pyrite. Petrified wood with red areas are due to iron inclusions and bright green woods are due to chromium. It is found all over the world in varying amounts. It has limited use except as a decorative material or collectors specimen.
