RED GARNET

A silicate mineral used since the bronze age for jewelry and an abrasive material. The name comes from the roots of many languages and means dark red. Garnets are nesosilicates & are most often found in the dodecahedral crystal habit, but are also commonly found in the trapezohedron habit as well as the hexoctahedral habit. To identify a garnet, a pick-up response to a strong neodymium magnet separates the garnet from all other natural transparent gemstones. Garnet is a good abrasive, and a good substitute for silica in sand blasting.
