SNAKESKIN AGATE

(Rome, Oregon)

Found only in Oregon, Snakeskin Agate is a light colored, rough seam agate, and when not over tumbled, has a white outer coating, making it appear like shed snake skin. The stone itself isn’t an actual agate, missing the telltale white stripes. However, it is a variety of chalcedony, light orangey white in appearance, with a white opal coating; common in chalcedony. This variety stands out with its opal coating, and the pitting and rough areas lend to its namesake.
